I am grateful for the opportunity to share my support for 3P Protect Perryman Peninsula and for the residents who have worked so hard to protect their community, environment, and quality of life. Perryman’s future should be shaped by clean water, safe neighborhoods, protected landscapes, environmental justice, and equitable access to opportunity.
For too long, communities like Perryman have carried burdens that were not evenly shared. As Maryland’s Comptroller, I believe public decisions should be grounded in transparency, fiscal responsibility, and long-term accountability. Communities deserve to know what is being proposed, who benefits, who pays, and what costs may be left behind after a project is approved.
3P’s vision recognizes that responsible growth must do more than promise investment. It must reverse long-standing environmental and racial inequities, center community needs, strengthen infrastructure and public safety, expand access to green space and recreation, preserve historic and cultural resources, support sustainable economic development, and require open, collaborative planning. Growth is important, but growth should be responsible.
Across Maryland, communities are being asked to absorb the impacts of large-scale development, warehouse expansion, freight movement, energy infrastructure, data centers, and other industrial uses. Jobs, investment, and tax revenue matter, but they cannot be the only measure of public value.
The full cost of development should be evaluated, particularly in sensitive areas. That includes impacts on roads, water, energy systems, emergency services, public health, natural resources, and the people who live with the consequences every day. Maryland’s future depends on growth that is thoughtful, sustainable, and fair.
